Sanders Quits Stanford Team to Accept Money

Summer Sanders, the only member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic swim team to qualify in four individual events, announced Tuesday that she will forgo her final two years of eligibility at NCAA champion Stanford to pursue commercial endorsements and accept financing for training.
“I want to emphasize that I love my university very much and that my Stanford Coach (Richard Quick) has been incredibly supportive of me in this very, very difficult decision,” Sanders said.
Sanders, 19, of Roseville, Calif., was the NCAA swimmer of the year the last two seasons after winning six NCAA individual titles and sharing in four relay championships.
She will swim in the 100- and 200-meter butterfly and the 200- and 400-meter individual medleys at Barcelona this summer.
