AT&T; Fights Long-Distance Theft: American Telephone & Telegraph Co. rolled out a new security program in New York aimed at protecting businesses from anyone who might try to “steal” their long-distance phone service. Calling phone fraud a nationwide problem costing upward of $1.2 billion a year, the company said the program gives customers the products, services and education they need to combat such fraud, as well as protection against financial liability. Long-distance fraud often takes place when an outsider cracks the access codes to a company’s internal phone system. The system can then be used to place long-distance or international calls.
