Foreign films are the order of the weekend at two ends of the county. On Saturday, the Thousand Oaks Library’s Classic Cinema group will present “Madame Rosa,” winner of the 1977 Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

It stars Simone Signoret as the title character, a Holocaust survivor and retired prostitute. Rosa has taken to caring for the children of other prostitutes. The story centers on her relationship with an Arab boy she raised. The movie will begin at 7 p.m. at the library, 1401 E. Janss Road. Admission is $2.

On Sunday, the Ojai Film Society will show “The Reincarnation of Golden Lotus,” a 1990 film by director Clara Law of Hong Kong. The film is based on a classic character from Chinese literature named Lotus, who, because of unfortunate circumstances, is considered to be “the No. 1 slut in ancient history.”

In the film, Lotus is reincarnated and comes back to Shanghai in the 1960s and faces circumstances similar to those that earned her a bad reputation in a previous life. The film looks at how, as a young, beautiful woman in China, she has to fight for her rights and her reputation in what so many years later is still a male-dominated society. The R-rated movie will be shown at 4:30 p.m. at the Ojai Playhouse, 145 E. Ojai Ave. Admission is $6.

And now to make up for an embarrassing oversight in last week’s column. The Ojai Film Society last Sunday showed the film “Rambling Rose” as part two of its Festival of Slightly Overlooked American Movies From 1991. I wrote that it was also the final part of that short series.

It seems, however, that I overlooked one of the overlooked films. On May 24, the Society will present “Chameleon Street” as the final installment in the series.
