From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Anti-government protesters enraged by years of economic hardship rampaged across Nigeria’s capital, Lagos, for a second day, smashing and looting dozens of downtown offices, banks and shops. Police said two people died on the first day of the riots, which were triggered by a gasoline shortage in this West African nation, one of the world’s major oil producers. Other sources reported between two and four more deaths the second day. The violence, the worst in years, could upset the military leadership’s schedule for handing power to elected civilians by next year. Gasoline shortages have plagued Nigeria for months but worsened in recent days.
