Agencies Offering Immediate Assistance to People Affected by Riots
While mapping out ways to improve public transit and provide jobs to South Los Angeles and other riot-scarred areas, county transportation agencies also are moving to help people affected by the disturbances.
The Southern California Rapid Transit District temporarily extended the life of its April monthly bus passes because some sales outlets were burned and customers had a hard time getting to others.
The RTD, working with local relief agencies, also has initiated a new South-Central shuttle bus that links five emergency food distribution agencies. The fare on this temporary route is 25 cents.
Meanwhile, Assemblyman Richard Katz and Los Angeles County Transportation Commission board member Ray Grabinski today plan to donate $40,000 to Operation Foodbasket to expand a taxi service that is providing free or low-cost rides to and from food distribution centers.
The service, provided by L. A. Taxi, also is giving free cab rides to handicapped and elderly riot victims needing to run other errands.
