VALLEYWIDE : Limit Sought on Classroom Heat

The California State Parent Teacher Assn. will press state lawmakers to establish maximum acceptable temperatures for classrooms in response to a recommendation by parents in the San Fernando Valley, where students in schools often swelter in oppressive heat during summer months.

At the group’s annual convention in Anaheim over the weekend, the state PTA adopted a resolution calling for minimum and maximum temperatures in California’s classrooms, as well as for training of campus personnel to recognize and treat heat-related illnesses.

The state Education Code does not address the issue of classroom temperatures, said Cecelia Mansfield, vice president for education for the 31st District Parent Teacher Student Assn., which covers the Valley and which submitted the resolution.

The resolution urges adherence to standards already in place for day-care centers, where temperatures are required to stay between 68 degrees and 85 degrees.
