Share

The public will be given free tours of a working Navy frigate June 6 as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Seabees, officials said.

The frigate Reasoner will visit Port Hueneme from its base in San Diego to give the public an opportunity to talk with the crew and see firsthand the capabilities of the huge weapons carrier.

A Knox-class frigate, the Reasoner is used for antiaircraft and surface defense, shore bombardment, search-and-rescue and counter-narcotics operations. Weapons on board include an anti-submarine rocket launcher, hull-mounted torpedoes and anti-ship missiles.

The ship saw action during the Vietnam War and escorted the aircraft carrier Independence through the Indian Ocean and the North Arabian Gulf during the Persian Gulf War.

Tours will be offered from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors should enter the Naval Construction Battalion Center through the Pleasant Valley gate in Port Hueneme. Bus transportation will be provided from there.
