Six Los Angeles Unified School District campuses on Monday were honored by the U.S. Department of Education for their bilingual programs.

The elementary schools, whose students participated in the awards ceremonies at district headquarters, are Evergreen Avenue, Florence Avenue, Humphreys Avenue, all in Los Angeles; San Fernando in San Fernando; Sharpe Avenue in Pacoima, and Wilmington Park in Wilmington.

A spokeswoman said that 52% of the district’s elementary school students have limited English skills. The aim of the programs is to teach students in their native languages until they have mastered English well enough to keep up in regular classes.
