New Jersey Governor Vetoes Sales Tax Drop

TRENTON, N.J. —
Gov. James J. Florio vetoed a bill on Monday that would have reduced the state sales tax by a penny, saying he could not support the drop without knowing how the Legislature plans to make up for the lost revenue.
Florio, a Democrat, has said he would be happy to see a reduction in the 7% sales tax, but not if it means higher property taxes, college tuition, transit fares or reductions in state services.
Republican leaders pledged an override attempt.
