Summer Gets the Green Flag: The summer driving season gets underway this weekend with fairly low gasoline prices that are expected to rise only slightly in the coming months, energy experts said. In fact, gas prices probably will be cheaper this summer than next fall, when refiners will be forced to sell more expensive but cleaner blends to comply with tougher environmental laws. “If all the new fuels come aboard, this may be the last year of cheap gasoline,” said Jerry Ferrara, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline Retailer’s Assn. The Memorial Day holiday marks the start of the summer driving season as Americans take to the nation’s highways on family trips and vacations.
