From Times Staff and Wire Reports

The military government banned all associations based on tribal, ethnic and religious ties after three days of rioting between Christians and Muslims that left more than 200 people dead. Newspapers, meanwhile, reported that Nigerian security agents had arrested human rights leader Beko Ransome-Kuti. No reason was given for the arrest. Ransome-Kuti’s Committee for the Defense of Human Rights demanded that the government resign last week after economic hardship triggered riots in 10 cities.
