Talk about a block party . . . Hermosa Beach’s Fiesta de las Artes has it covered.

Downtown Hermosa Beach will be transformed into a holiday party this weekend for one of the South Bay’s most anticipated Memorial Day events: the 30th semiannual Fiesta de las Artes.

Browsers, buyers, diners and dancers are expected to descend on Hermosa Beach for the three-day fair that attracts artisans from across the country and diverse musical entertainment.

This year, 100,000 people are expected to throng the streets in search of that perfect gift, a taste of international cuisine, a chance to stroll with their sweethearts or a long weekend’s diversion for antsy youngsters.

About 400 artisans from as far away as Missouri will ply handcrafted wares such as jewelry, ceramics, handblown glass, acrylic sculptures, exotic woodwork and original fashions.

The arts and crafts booths offer something for every taste and every wallet, event coordinator B.J. Conte said.

“There’s a lot of small-ticket items, like a couple dollars for costume jewelry, up to thousands of dollars for pieces of art,” Conte said.

Ten of the fiesta’s most talented artisans will pick up awards for their work in a ceremony scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.

“It’s usually (for)) something new, maybe something dynamic,” Conte said. “Something where you see it and go, ‘Ohhhhh!’ ”

If strolling and shopping work up an appetite, festival-goers can visit the International Food Pavilion and explore the cuisine of Thailand, Greece, Italy, Jamaica, Africa and other countries at booths hosted by local restaurants and service organizations.

A Ferris wheel, kiddie train and pony rides are among the attractions awaiting young visitors. Children can also greet and feed four-legged friends at the Animal Ark Petting Zoo or visit with the Scott Land Marionettes, a cast of talented puppets that includes miniature jugglers, musicians, break-dancers and a convincing Michael Jackson imitator. (Yes, he moonwalks.)

Budding entertainers may want to test their style in the Video Theatre, where they can create their own music video. But for those who’d rather listen than perform, the festival presents live entertainment throughout the weekend. Afro-Caribbean beats, classic rock, soft jazz and foot-stomping zydeco are among the strains that will provide a soundtrack for the event.

A musical highlight will be the Playboy Jazz Festival Collegiate Playoffs, from noon to 4 p.m. Monday. The event will feature three Southern California competitors, and the winner will open the Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl in June.

For some Southern Californians, the Festival de las Artes, sponsored by the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, has become a Memorial Day tradition, said Wesley Bush, the chamber’s executive director.

“I had a call from a woman in (Rancho) Cucamonga whose kids played in a band here once and this year they just want to come back to attend the fair,” Bush said. “When the weather’s nice, like it is most of the time, it’s just like going on vacation.”

Admission to the festival is free. Visitors are encouraged to use the fiesta’s free shuttle service from Mira Costa High School at Artesia Boulevard and Peck Avenue.
