Judge Says Intel Must Pay: Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Read Ambler upheld a $15-million damage award against Intel Corp. and confirmed rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s right to make a line of clone microprocessors, or computer “brains.” Intel immediately said it would appeal the decision and insisted that the underlying 386 microprocessor copyright issue remains a question for the federal courts. In the pending federal case, if the court rules in AMD’s favor, the company will be able to use Intel’s micro code until 1995. If the court rules against AMD, the company could be forced to re-engineer its chips.
