A judge on Friday upheld a $15-million damage award against Intel Corp. and confirmed rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc.’s right to make a line of clone microprocessors, or computer “brains.”

Intel immediately said it would appeal the decision by Read Ambler, a Santa Clara County Superior Court judge. It also insisted that the underlying copyright issue involving its 386 model microprocessor remains a question for the federal courts.

AMD spokesman John Greenagel agreed that an ongoing trial related to another type of chip will determine whether AMD has the right to copy Intel’s micro-code, the basic software that controls microprocessors.
