Taiwan-China Trade Surges: Trade between the mainland and the island state through Hong Kong surged 37.9% from a year earlier to $1.5 billion in the first quarter of 1992, the Taiwan Board of Foreign Trade said. Business is expected to continue expanding rapidly on the back of a heavy flow of Taiwanese industrial investment in China, the board said. Taiwan’s exports to China jumped 41.2% to $1.23 billion in the quarter. Imports from China into Taiwan, mostly agricultural materials, climbed 24.8% to $268 million. Most trade is routed through Hong Kong because Taiwan’s government still bans direct contact with China.
