From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Thai soldiers returned to their barracks after the acting prime minister voided a state of emergency put in place by his embattled predecessor. The acting prime minister, Meechai Ruchupan, also threatened to dissolve Parliament and call new elections to end Thailand’s political impasse. Justice Minister Sawas Khamprakorb said that the five parties that chose Suchinda Kraprayoon, touching off protests and days of violence in Bangkok, agreed to dissolve their ruling coalition, clearing the way for the appointment of a new prime minister to replace Suchinda, who resigned last weekend.
