Alternatives to Landfill

Share

The Board of Supervisors’ decision to send the Weldon Canyon Environmental Impact Report back for revision was long overdue. Our county government has at last recognized that other alternatives to a Weldon Canyon landfill need to be studied. The residents of the Valley Vista tract, who live 2,000 feet from Weldon Canyon, and the residents of North Ventura Avenue have almost unanimously opposed the EIR’s conclusions that Weldon is the best site for the next trash dump. In three days over 310 signatures were collected from these neighborhoods on petitions supporting revision of the EIR.

It is unfortunate that the search for alternatives to a Weldon dump took so long to take place. It is troubling that county planners did not release to the public important information that identified superior sites to Weldon. In spite of this, the people of North Ventura Avenue will continue our effort for fairness in this landfill study process and insist that a landfill alternative be found that will have the lowest possible impact to all the people of Ventura County.
