* 1/2 Leon Russell, “Anything Can Happen,” Virgin. Revivified ‘70s icons like the Allman Brothers and Little Feat have justified their returns by re-establishing distinctive and enduring styles. Russell’s comeback, however, gets lost in a weak gloss of trendy synthesizers, drum machines and metal-squall guitar. Russell’s piano work is practically absent, a surprise given that his admirer and fellow keybanger Bruce Hornsby shepherded the recording.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
