A 3-year-old boy who had been kidnaped and left in a burning car remained in extremely critical condition at the Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center on Monday night after undergoing extensive surgery and skin grafts in the burn ward in an attempt to save his life.

Officials say Samuel Jones Jr. suffered third-degree burns over 60% of his body when Belinda Crawford, 28, kidnaped him from a day-care center in Long Beach on May 26, placed him in her car, set the vehicle on fire, slammed the car door shut and walked away.

Crawford, arrested when she returned to the scene, has been booked on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnaping, arson and torture. She is being held without bail pending her arraignment June 12.
