The concrete walls around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2 1/2-mile track will be replaced with steel-reinforced concrete built to the international standard of 39 inches high. The walls currently are about 30 inches high.
The Indianapolis 500 is the only race run at the 83-year-old track, and Speedway President Tony George said the announcement was not necessarily related to speculation about other possible events.
Last month, the head of the International Federation of Auto Sports said he wants Indianapolis to join the Formula One racing circuit.
