Kisa Hughes, Big West freshman of the year at Cal State Fullerton last season, is in the process of transferring to UCLA, The Times has learned.

Hughes, a 6-foot-4 center, led the conference in rebounding (10.9 per game), field-goal percentage (.586) and blocked shots (2.0). She also averaged 12.5 points and had 12 double-doubles in 28 games with the Titans.

UCLA officials said they could not comment until Hughes has signed a grant in aid, but a Fullerton spokesman confirmed that Hughes intends to transfer.

Hughes averaged 21 points and 16 rebounds as a senior at Riverside North High. When she signed to play with Fullerton, Coach Maryalyce Jeremiah said, “Kisa is the biggest, strongest player ever to play at Cal State Fullerton. Her potential is unlimited.”

Friday, Jeremiah was promoted to associate athletic director/senior woman administrator at Fullerton and resigned her position as basketball coach, a job she had held since 1985.
