Simi Valley school board members have awarded $668,462 in contracts for maintenance work at 15 area schools and two district facilities.

The work will be completed over the summer.

Seven contractors were chosen Tuesday night by the board to paint the exterior of Berylwood Elementary, Big Springs Elementary, Garden Grove Elementary, Hollow Hills Elementary, Abraham Lincoln Elementary, Mountain View Elementary, Santa Susana Elementary, Township Elementary and Royal High schools, in addition to the district’s headquarters and a separate transportation facility.

The board also hired painting contractor D. M. Shanks to oversee the projects.

Total cost of the painting will be $136,630, plus $12,375 for the inspection work.

Asphalt paving, including playgrounds and parking lots, will be done at Atherwood Elementary, Big Springs Elementary, Hollow Hills Elementary, Katherine Elementary, Abraham Lincoln Elementary, Township Elementary, Vista Elementary, Hillside Junior High, Sequoia Junior High and Simi Valley High schools, in addition to the transportation facility.

Three contractors were hired to do the asphalt work at a total cost of $519,457.

Inspection work will be done by district officials.

The majority of the funds will come from a $35-million bond measure passed by voters in 1989, with the remainder made up with district funds, officials said.

“It’s nice to be able to spread the work around,” said Mary Beth Wolford, deputy superintendent of the Simi Valley Unified School District.

“It’s going to employ a lot of people who might not otherwise have had jobs this summer.”

Work will begin in late June and finish before school resumes Sept. 2.
