Rioting and Responsibility

Share

Kolkey tries to find a scapegoat for the riots. He blames the welfare system. Vice President Dan Quayle blames the lack of “traditional” family values as in Murphy Brown. Others blame violence in the movies. We all try to look outside our own value system.

I think the problem goes deeper. Violence is as natural as apple pie in the culture of the United States. We have a history of violence. We glorify violence. We praise violence in our national leaders. When President Bush chose the violent approach to Iraq, his popularity soared.

Is it any wonder that people in the inner city chose violence?
