IRVINE : Residents Invited to Get Rid of Junk

Share

Residents with broken appliances, lumpy mattresses or assorted other junk will have an opportunity to get rid of them this weekend during the city’s regular Clean Up Days.

From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. today, Saturday and Sunday, residents may drop off items too large for curb-side trash pickup at Sunset Environmental Industries, 16182 Construction Circle West, near Jamboree Road and Barranca Parkway. There will be no charge, but the program is open only to Irvine residents. Identification will be required.

In the past, the city has left collection bins for bulky items at several locations throughout the city, but some residents complained that the bins were unsightly and caused excessive noise and odor.

The city also was saddled earlier this year with an $800 disposal charge after someone left a hazardous material at an unsupervised bin overnight during the March Clean Up Days, according to a report by Robert Graham, public works director. The problem will be solved this month by providing bins only at one location and closing it at night, Graham’s report said.

Residents with hazardous materials such as paint and motor oil will be able to dispose of them on June 13, the city’s hazardous waste collection day. For more information on this weekend’s cleanup days or next week’s hazardous collection day, call (714) 857-1170.
