ANTELOPE VALLEY : School Board OKs 11 More Layoffs

Share

The Board of Trustees of the Antelope Valley Union High School District, still trying to cope with a projected $12.4-million budget deficit, has voted to lay off another 11 classified workers in July in addition to the more than 100 employees already slated to lose their jobs.

The trustees approved the new layoffs by a 4-0 vote Wednesday night but promised to try to rescind the action before it takes effect July 10. District officials said the additional clerk and janitor jobs had to be eliminated because the district’s classified workers--clerical and other non-teaching employees--thus far have refused a 7% pay cut.

The workers had demanded some guarantee against further layoffs, but district officials refused. The two sides agreed to more talks aimed at resolving the dispute without new layoffs. The earlier layoffs and proposed pay cuts are part of the district’s fiscal recovery plan.
