USC’s Franke Seventh in Discus

AUSTIN, Tex. — Allison Franke, a Canyon High graduate now at USC, finished seventh in the women’s discus Friday at the NCAA track and field championships at the University of Texas. Franke’s best throw was 163 feet 7 inches. Anna Mosdell of BYU won with 179-9.
Lori Svoboda of Cal State Long Beach, a 1989 El Dorado High graduate, finished eighth in the high jump, clearing 5-10 1/2. Tanya Hughes of Arizona won at 6-1 1/2.
Marieke Veltman, UC Irvine’s school-record holder in the women’s long jump, finished 10th in her event. Veltman leaped 19 feet 11 3/4 inches, well short of her record 21-0 1/2 set this season and a 20-0 1/4 jump during the heptathlon. Jackie Edwards of Stanford won the event at 21-7 1/2.
