NIELSEN: “Saul and David.” Tina Kiberg, Peter Lindroos, Kurt Westi, Aage Haugland; Danish National Radio Choir and Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Neeme Jarvi. Chandos 8911/12 (two CDs). This first CD recording of Carl Nielsen’s (1901) opera in the original language heralds a remarkably vibrant work in a performance pervaded with fervor and excitement. In his treatment of the Old Testament tale, the Danish composer straddled the fence between Wagnerism and a more nationalistic kind of music theater, enveloping his vocal line in the surging energy and rapturous flow that mark his symphonies. Until a live production comes along, Jarvi’s fiery leadership and the committed performances of Chandos’ Scandinavian cast should serve handsomely. Haugland’s dark bass dominates; Saul’s death scene emerges the most poignant moment in the four short acts.
