MINOR QUESTION: Strange things seem to happen when any legislators get involved in censorship, but Pop Eye is still trying to figure out just what the sponsors of the new Louisiana record labeling act have in mind.

The bill--passed by the state’s House of Representatives on May 19 and expected to reach the Senate floor next week--is designed to prohibit the sale of albums that contain “harmful” lyrics to minors, which is fairly standard in these cases. But what about this provision: The proposal exempts married persons under the age of 17.

Great balls of fire!

That means any 16-year-old who follows Louisiana rock pioneer Jerry Lee Lewis’ lead and marries his 13-year-old cousin can stop by the local record store on the way home and buy the new 2 Live Crew album without penalty.

Rep. Ted Haik (R-New Iberia), who sponsored the measure in the House, declined to discuss any specific details of his bill.
