Search-and-rescue demonstrations, featuring a helicopter and patrol boat, will highlight a Coast Guard’s open house Sunday, officials said.

The open house at the Coast Guard’s Air Station, 2710 North Harbor Drive, will kick off National Safe Boating Week.

The rescue demonstrations will be at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Activities, which run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include dog units from the Sheriff’s Department, the Border Patrol, the San Diego Police Department and U.S. Customs.

“The canine units are great for the kids, they really love the dogs,” said Jackie Ulery, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. “The whole day is great because it’s free, educational and fun.”

The Customs canine unit will display its drug-detecting skills, Ulery said.

The Marine Corps Band will perform at noon, and the Coast Guard’s 110- and 82-foot cutters and their smaller patrol boats will be open for tours all day. Also on display will be the “Jayhawk,” the Coast Guard’s newest helicopter, Ulery said.

Free parking is available across the street from the Coast Guard Air Station at Teledyne-Ryan.
