Authorities recovered the stolen car believed to have been used by a man who shot and seriously wounded a sheriff’s deputy during a routine traffic stop in Lemon Grove, officials said Sunday.

Deputy Paul E. Kain, 34, was shot three times early Saturday in the lower torso by a motorist who had been stopped for a broken light on the car, sheriff’s officials said.

The 1985 blue Camaro, believed to have been driven by the gunman, was found Saturday night near an apartment complex in El Cajon. A resident in the building reported the car to sheriff’s authorities after recognizing the license number from a television news report. The car had been reported stolen from a motel in El Cajon, a sheriff’s spokesman said.
