Bennett, 81, Won’t Seek 23rd House Term

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. —
Rep. Charles E. Bennett (D-Fla.), the second most senior member of the House, unexpectedly announced his retirement Sunday. He said that concern about his wife’s health made him change his mind about seeking a 23rd term.
Bennett, 81, as late as last week was saying he would run again. He said he changed his mind because his wife, Jean, suffered a stroke last Monday. He was the 75th member of Congress to say he won’t be back next year.
