WORDS AND IMAGES : Cartoonist Klatch : Animation artists and producers will assemble this weekend in Ojai to share information on their art and experiences.

Major animation artists, Hollywood producers and creators of incredible new computer technologies will be gathering at Animation III in Ojai this weekend. Presented by the Ojai Film Society, the all-day trade fair and conference will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue until midnight at Matilija Junior High School. Workshops and seminars will be offered on everything from hands-on basics of animation for children and adults to careers in animation and cartooning.

Tom Sito of Disney Studios will preside over the morning program, featuring animation department heads from UCLA, USC and CalArts in Valencia, who will showcase the work of students. Professional animators will also screen their individual visions via commercials, character cartoons and experimental pieces.

Moderated by Mad magazine cartoonist Sergio Aragones, the afternoon seminar will feature the people and companies that continue to create extraordinary new computer animation and software technology. Disney, Fox, Warner Bros., Paramount and Hanna-Barbera are among the Hollywood production companies that will show “work in progress” during the evening program presented by film star Peter Strauss.

The public can attend any or all of the seminars for $10 each. For ticket information, call 646-8946. There is no charge for the trade fair. The closing event of this year’s festival, at 11 a.m. Sunday, is a screening of award-winning animated shorts from the National Film Board of Canada. The screening will be in the Ojai Playhouse; the cost is $6.

The Fillmore Library will begin its weekly Thursday films for children of all ages from 4 to 5 p.m. today at 502 2nd St. The summer reading program for children and adults includes Morning Storytime at 10 a.m. Fridays and Pajama Storytime at 7 p.m. Tuesdays.

The Ventura County chapter of Independent Writers of Southern California will hear Pat Norquist describe “How to Earn a Living Producing Newsletters” at 7:30 p.m. today at Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura. Fee for non-members is $8. Call 644-9592.

A used book and bake sale is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Newbury Park Branch Library, 2331 Borchard Road.

Roger S. Baum, great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, author of “The Wizard of Oz,” will talk about growing up in the Baum family and the new generation of Oz books he has written at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ray D. Prueter Library, 510 Park Ave., Port Hueneme. Guests are encouraged to dress as Oz characters. The library also presents children’s and bilingual story times and family film evenings.

Helen Sand will teach a four-week class, “Turn Fiction Into Film,” at Ventura College beginning June 20. Register at 654-6459.
