Bar-Ilan University Nets $1.2 Million From Friends

Bar-Ilan University in Israel will receive $1.25 million for its School of Business Administration. Of that amount, $1 million was donated by Arnold and Anita Lorber, and the balance was raised at a May 21 gala at the Century Plaza hosted by West Coast Friends of Bar-Ilan. James Woods was master of ceremonies. Entertainment was provided by Julie Budd and Rich Little.

T. J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia, Cancer and AIDS Research has received $10,000, the proceeds from a grand opening party May 2 at the Hard Rock Cafe Tijuana.

Craft and Folk Art Museum’s May 30 gala at the Neutrogena Corp. headquarters netted $40,000. More than 200 guests enjoyed dinner, dancing and a behind-the-scenes tour of the folk art collection. Proceeds will support the museum’s exhibitions, public education programs and ongoing operations.

Celiac Disease Foundation has announced receipt of a $15,000 grant from the Herman Goldman Foundation. The grant will provide education in the medical community and community at large.

Los Angeles Mission’s Exodus Fund, a $1-million goal program established to help the homeless rent apartments, has received $483,000 from three gifts: $308,000 from the Herb Alpert Foundation, $75,000 from the David Geffen Foundation and $100,000 from an anonymous foundation. The fund will provide graduates of the program with 50% of move-in costs. Up to 100 graduates annually will be eligible for the one-time rent subsidy.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation received more than $130,000, net proceeds raised at the May 16 “Evening with the California Winemasters” gala at the Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey. The event, which included a silent auction of fine wines and international trips, was conducted by Tim Mondavi, who was also master of ceremonies. Proceeds will fund research.

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles has announced receipt of a $50,000 grant from the National Leukemia Broadcast Council to Dr. Paul Pattengale, Division of Pathology/Research. The council has made a one-year commitment to fund research on advanced technology and techniques for detection of minimal residual leukemia.

Organization for the Needs of the Elderly, at a ceremony April 6, announced receipt of a $1-million grant from the Mark Taper Foundation at the proposed site for its new center in Van Nuys. The new center, to be called the Mark Taper Intergenerational Center, will provide day-care services for dependent elders and preschool children.
