Santa Monica-Malibu : District Plans Busing Fee
- Share via
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will begin charging some Malibu students for bus transportation this fall in an effort to help offset a projected $1.2-million budget shortfall for the coming school year.
More than 300 students who travel by bus from Malibu-area neighborhoods to Cabrillo Elementary School, Webster Elementary School and Malibu High School will be asked to pay $195 for a one-year bus pass. Additional riders from the same family will be charged less, and students who qualify for reduced-price lunches will receive a discount.
Students from Malibu who attend Santa Monica High School and students from Santa Monica who attend Malibu High School will not be required to buy a pass. Students who participate in the special education or voluntary desegregation program will also continue to ride for free.
The bus passes will bring between $30,000 to $50,000 to the school district. The unanimous vote by school board members at Monday’s meeting reinstates the practice of charging for bus transportation, which has been free since 1988.
