Pop Album Chart : Wilson Phillips Charges Into Top 10

Share

Wilson Phillips, the vocal trio made up of stars’ daughters, is off to a blazing start with its new album, “Shadows and Light,” which entered the Billboard chart at No. 4. But will this one have the enduring commercial clout of their debut album, which sold more than 5 million copies? The new one will need a boost from several Top 10 singles. In that department, the trio is off to a bad start. The first single, “You Won’t See Me Cry,” stalled at No. 21 on the pop singles chart. The odds-on favorite for the next No. 1 album is Mariah Carey’s “MTV Unplugged EP,” which entered at No. 8. Detractors predicted that Billy Ray Cyrus’ “Some Gave All” would sink like an anchor after a week at the top. But it’s No. 1 for the second straight week and shows signs of at least being a Top 5 seller for a while. After eight weeks at No. 1 on the pop singles chart, Kris Kross’ “Jump” was replaced by Carey’s “I’ll Be There.”

* Queen continues its assault on the charts with re-releases of old albums, the biggest being “Classic Queen” (No. 14). A new generation of fans has been introduced to the band, partly through the “Wayne’s World” movie and soundtrack. This live Queen album debuted at No. 53.
