MOORPARK : Officials to Seek Ideas for Library

Share

County and Moorpark officials will sponsor a community meeting Tuesday to discuss plans to build a new city library four times as large as its current one.

Officials from the county’s library service agency, Mayor Paul W. Lawrason Jr. and county Supervisor Vicky Howard are holding the meeting to gather suggestions on what the new library should include to serve Moorpark residents, according to library officials.

In addition, the meeting will feature a presentation by private consultants hired by the county to design the facility.

County officials have proposed building a 20,000-square-foot library in Moorpark to accommodate the city’s growing population, which is expected to nearly double to about 45,000 in the next 20 years.

A study commissioned by the county showed that the city’s existing 5,000-square-foot library is too small even for its current population of 26,000.

Many Moorpark residents have ignored their city’s library in favor of the modern, expansive library in Thousand Oaks. But residents began demanding a better local library after Thousand Oaks started charging $55 per year for library cards issued to people who don’t live in the city.

Tuesday’s meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Moorpark Community Center.
