SANTA ANA : School Board Rejects Election-Year Change
After a brief debate, the Santa Ana Unified School District board last week tabled a cost-cutting proposal to consolidate its odd-year elections with the general election.
The move would have cut the cost of Board of Education elections in half, but would also have extended the terms of all current members by one year. Board members Rosemarie Avila and Sal Mendoza objected to any term extension that was not approved by voters.
Board member Robert W. Balen spoke in favor of the proposal, calling it “obviously a very positive thing we can do for the district.”
Board member Richard C. Hernandez floated the idea as a way for the district to save money but tabled it after hearing opinions from the other board members. The change would have reduced the cost of elections from $1.05 per registered voter to about 60 cents per registered voter.
