After the Riots / NEWS IN BRIEF : Disaster Assistance Centers to Stay Open Until July 15
Disaster assistance centers that were set to close last week will remain open until July 15 to give residents affected by the riots more time to apply for federal aid programs. In addition, application deadlines for most aid programs have been extended to that date.
“We want to make sure that everyone who is eligible for assistance is able to apply,” said Federal Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Ruth Austen.
The agency’s eight disaster centers will offer most of the same services as before, including Small Business Administration loans, disaster housing assistance, grants for individuals and families who lost property or jobs, mortgage and rental assistance, disaster unemployment insurance and crisis counseling.
Beginning this week, the centers will operate five days a week, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
More than 20,000 people have registered for information or applied for some form of federal aid, officials said.

* Hollywood Recreation Center, 1122 Cole Ave.
* Kedren Community Center, Gilbert Lindsay Park, 4211 S. Avalon Blvd.
* Department of Water and Power, 4030 Crenshaw Blvd.
* Pico-Union, 1725 Toberman Ave.
* Compton Transit Center, 307 Tamarind Ave.
* California Recreation Center, 1550 Martin Luther King Blvd., Long Beach
