Art Censorship

Share

I am writing on behalf of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD/LA) with respect to “Gay Art to Be Covered Up for Show” (May 22).

As you may know, GLAAD is a nationwide grass-roots organization that seeks to encourage and promote more balanced and accurate portrayals of gays and lesbians in the media.

We are very pleased that The Times’ coverage of the attempt to censor high school artist Letitia Houston was prominent, sensitive and timely. All too often, similar instances of the suppression of minority viewpoints are ignored and everyone’s rights to free expression are reduced.

We are impressed by your positive portrayal of Houston’s strength as an artist and as a thoughtful young person. And we are especially pleased that you included in the story a quotation from Houston’s mother backing her daughter’s position: Many parents of gays and lesbians are supportive of their children yet it is all too rare that this aspect of family life in our society appears in the media.
