A second person arrested in the shooting of a sheriff’s deputy during a routine traffic stop June 6 pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of being an accessory after the fact.

Heather Anne McVey, a 26-year-old Lakeside woman, allegedly “harbored, concealed and aided” accused gunman James Michael Bright as he attempted to evade arrest.

“She was aware of the circumstances of the shooting,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jennifer Crossland.

Bright pleaded not guilty Monday to one count of attempted murder in the shooting of Deputy Paul E. Kain. Contrary to previous reports, McVey is not suspected of being in the stolen vehicle when the shooting occurred in Lemon Grove.

Municipal Judge Nicholas Kasimatis ordered McVey held in lieu of $10,000 bail. A bail reduction hearing was scheduled for June 19. A preliminary hearing for both defendants is scheduled for June 26.
