LANCASTER : Housing Plan Under Flight Path Rejected

Share

The Lancaster City Council has rejected a planned 296-house development under the flight path at Air Force Plant 42 after Air Force officials warned that the project “will be another nail in the coffin” of the military base, the area’s largest employer.

The City Council voted 5 to 0 Monday night to deny an extension of development entitlements sought by Redwood City-based EIC Group for an 80-acre parcel at the southwest corner of 30th Street East and Avenue K-8. Air Force officials said about 80 jets a day fly over the site just north of the base.

Air Force officials have warned that the base, which employs about 7,000 people, could be forced out if encroachment by housing continues. The proposed extension was the first in a series of such requests from developers expected to be heard soon by the council.
