Agnes West Aldrich; Red Cross Volunteer
Agnes West Aldrich, noted American Red Cross volunteer and the widow of former Los Angeles city engineer and three-time mayoral candidate Lloyd Aldrich, has died. She was 87.
Mrs. Aldrich died June 5 of cancer at her home in Leisure World Laguna Hills, her son, Edward Aldrich, announced last week.
During World War II, Mrs. Aldrich performed more than 10,000 hours of volunteer work for the American Red Cross. As chairwoman of the Los Angeles chapter’s committee on home nursing, she frequently organized classes teaching people how to care for the sick and elderly at home.
During her husband’s ill-fated campaign for mayor in 1949, Mrs. Aldrich was thrown from a horse and trampled. . Her subsequent brain surgery and recovery kept Aldrich from campaigning vigorously.
In addition to her son, of Glendale, Mrs. Aldrich is survived by three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
