Patronage Extends to Quayle’s 2 Sons; Both Get Senate Jobs

WASHINGTON — The two sons of Vice President Dan Quayle, who has criticized congressional patronage and perks, were given summer jobs with the Senate.
David Beckwith, the vice president’s spokesman, said Wednesday that Quayle did not personally intervene to get the appointments from Senate GOP colleagues for his sons Tucker, 17, and Benjamin, 15.
He also said Quayle saw no inconsistency between his rhetoric and the boys’ accepting the patronage positions.
The Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call reported that Tucker Quayle earned just over $3,900 working as a mail carrier for about two months in 1990 and one month in 1991.
Benjamin Quayle earned $842 working as a Senate page for a month last summer, and will serve as a page for two weeks again this year, the paper said.
