A suspected gang member who allegedly shot one person and opened fire on two Los Angeles police officers was wounded Thursday near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Broadway Place in South Los Angeles, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Lt. William Hall said plainclothes officers Edward Harrell, 43, and Martha Kelly, 30, assigned to an anti-gang detail, were driving along King Boulevard on Thursday afternoon when they observed several suspected gang members chasing another youth on foot.

The officers said one of the pursuers, a 17-year-old, shot the youth, also 17, and, after ignoring an order to throw down his weapon, turned and fired at the officers, striking the side of their vehicle.

The policemen fired 17 rounds at the suspect, wounding him several times in the legs, Hall said.

The suspect and the other shooting victim were taken to County-USC Medical Center, where they were in stable condition Thursday night, police said.
