Choir Plans Special Musical Event

Placentia Presbyterian Church will present a special concert Sunday featuring the chancel choir and guest musicians. Titled “The Choir Relaxes,” the choir will sing selections from Broadway musicals, folk songs and religious hymns.

Tim Lutz is the choir director and Pat Adams is the organist. Cost of the 7 p.m. concert is $3 for adults and $1 for children. A reception will follow the performance at the church, 849 N. Bradford Ave., Placentia. Information: (714) 528-1438.

Carillonneur James R. Lawson will give a Father’s Day recital on the 52-bell Arvella Schuller Carillon Sunday evening at 6:30 at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove. The Rev. Juan Carlos Ortiz will lead the worship service at 7 p.m.

The annual Chancel Choir Ice Cream Social and Musical will be held tonight at 6:30 at the United Methodist Church of Garden Grove. The choir will perform the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat” after the ice cream is served. Suggested donation is $3 per person or $6 per family.

On Sunday the Methodist Men will host a Father’s Day steak breakfast at 7:30 in the Fellowship Hall. A general meeting will follow at 8 a.m. and all are welcome. The worship services are at 9 and 10:30 at the church, 12741 Main St. Information: (714) 534-1070.

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach is hosting a program about Ross Perot tonight which includes a video presentation. A Perot committee representative will answer questions from the audience.

The Jewish Community Center of Orange County is sponsoring a book discussion group which meets one Wednesday morning a month at Fahrenheit 451 book store in Laguna Beach.

Laguna Beach United Methodist Church’s weeklong Vacation Bible School begins June 29 and is offered to children ages 5 to 12.

“Creation Spirituality and Ignatian Exercises” is the title of an eight-day retreat beginning July 3 at the Center for Spiritual Development in Orange. The retreat will be guided by Father Jerry Robinson and Sisters Jeanne Fallon and Martha Bendorf.

The retreat will include presentations, meditation, daily liturgy and evening prayer. Some of the teachings of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit order), will be included. Cost of the retreat is $220 for private room and board, $200 for shared room and board and $130 for commuters, which includes lunch. Registration is required by Tuesday. The Center is at 434 S. LifeCare Christian Therapy Center in Costa Mesa is sponsoring a seminar on relationships Friday led by lecturer Keith Miller. He is the author of the books “A Hunger for Healing” and “Facing Co-Dependence.”

A performance of “Gospel Mass” will be presented Sunday during the 9:30 a.m. service at the University United Methodist Church in Irvine. This is a Robert Ray composition using the Ordinary of the Catholic Mass as a foundation. The work is an alteration of the text, with some of the performance non-traditional.

A potluck to honor associate Pastor Alex Hunter and his wife, Patti, will be held after the service. They have been reassigned to Trinity United Methodist Church in San Diego.
