SIMI VALLEY : Attorney Is 1st to Seek Mayor’s Post

A 40-year-old Simi Valley attorney this morning will become the first to officially announce his candidacy for mayor, his campaign manager said.

Robert L. Plunkett has no experience in public service and is running as an outsider, said Aaron Starr, who will manage the campaign.

“He’s pretty fed up with politics as usual. He is registered as an independent,” Starr said.

Plunkett heads the Ventura County chapter of Parents for Educational Choice, which supports the proposed school voucher ballot initiative that would allow parents to use taxpayer money to send their children to private schools.

Plunkett plans to run on a platform emphasizing a reduction of regulations aimed at developers and business, Starr said. “It’s very difficult to do business in this town,” Starr said. “Those who are allowed to build shouldn’t jump through so many hoops.”

The mayoral election will take place in November.

Plunkett is scheduled to announce his candidacy at 10 a.m. in front of the Antique Junction at 2125 Madera Road. The Antique Junction is a business that was forced to close because of a zoning technicality, Starr said.
