OXNARD : Contract Awarded for Runway Project

Share

A $1.4-million contract to rebuild the Oxnard Airport runway has been awarded to Southern Pacific Milling Co. of Oxnard, the lowest of six bidders, county officials have announced.

The contract came in about $130,000 under the county engineer’s cost estimate for the project, which was $1.53 million, said Sally Luna, a county public works contract technician.

The highest bid, $2.213 million, was submitted by D. W. Burhoe Construction of Santa Paula.

The major portion of the project will be done during the first 10 days of July when the airport will be closed to incoming planes, although helicopters still will be allowed to use the facility.

As part of a major face-lift for the airport, the runway will be torn up and resurfaced, said Marshall MacKinen, county airports administrator. “We’re completely pulverizing the runway,” he said.

County officials hope that the project will fiscally rejuvenate the airport.

MacKinen said the airport will lose an undetermined amount of money in fuel-flowage fees during those 10 days.

Charter flights will be moved temporarily to the Camarillo Airport for the 10-day period, he said.
