Imelda Marcos’ supporters asked the government of President Corazon Aquino on Friday to return to the former first lady her collection of more than 1,200 pairs of shoes.

In a statement, her supporters also demanded an apology from the government to the flamboyant widow of former dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos.

“The personal effects must be returned with or without Mrs. Marcos wanting them back because they were stolen from her,” the statement, issued by Marcos’ New Society Movement, said.

The shoes, a bulletproof bra, luxurious gowns, perfume and other personal effects were left behind when the Marcos family fled into exile during a popular revolt in 1986. The belongings were put on display at the presidential palace, which was turned into a museum.
