To prevent loss of the city’s historic buildings, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously extended an urgency ordinance adopted last year to allow a survey of the city’s neighborhoods in order to identify historic structures.
The ordinance will allow the city staff 10 months and 15 days to complete the study and to draft a permanent ordinance on historic preservation.
The law also institutes a review of all applications for demolition permits to ensure that historic buildings will not be lost.
The law will “provide peace of mind for the community that they won’t lose a historic treasure,” City Administrator P. Michael Paules said.
