DIFFERENT SIGNALS: With teen-age suicides rising (E1), Orange County statistics follow the national finding that, overwhelmingly, the victims are boys. Suicide specialist Dr. Daun Martin of Costa Mesa, explains: “Girls cry out for help. They’ll call their best friend and say ‘I just took 60 pills.’. . . Boys go into an empty room alone and blow their brains out.” Martin adds that boys are more violent because they are more often physically abused.
Teen-Age Suicide
From 1985 to 1991, more than twice as many male teen-agers in Orange County committed suicide than did females.
Males: 70%
Females: 30%
